Unobtainable torture

I woke up this morning to the lovely sound of my wall neighbor's tv. After getting home form work at 5 am this was more than an annoyance. I stumbled down the stairs to let the dog out, only to find more rain. I don't mind the rain much, better than the endless snow that never seemed to go away this winter. It also makes things green and the grass soft and thick. Coming from a place where the grass is itchy crab grass that is pulled up as weeds here, I much appreciate the pillow like constancy that is Northern Plains grass. As I looked out the window at the soggy dumpster I contemplated going fishing today. My last attempt was not as successful as hoped so this was something to ponder before taking the plunge.
Unfortunately I only really enjoy fly fishing; a term that is not very well known in North Dakota. Normally discussing fly fishing around here with the locals results in one of these:

My neighbor across the way decided to discuss the techniques of fly fishing and the conversation turned a bit sour when he flat out told me I would never catch a walleye with a fly and I only would be catching fish using bait in these waters. This guy is a seasoned man so I figure he probably knows what he's talking about, however I made a strong attempt anyway. I went down to the only well known spot to cast a fly in the Great North Dakota and was full of high hopes for a trout filled dinner. Four hours later I was standing in the river with 8 visible trout right in front of me, passing my fly (wet and emerging) right through them as they looked at me with confused eyes. I can only imagine their thoughts being somewhere along the lines of - fuck off bitch. It was after a few babies took the hook that I gave up and went home. Maybe bait is the only way to go here...who knows. It's probably not a good sign that the only sporting goods store west of the state line doesn't even have fly stuff.

So that leaves me standing at the window, looking at the clouds, and contemplating a trip to fish the unobtainable. I think I'll just sit on the couch today.
